You are absolutely correct. That is why for VHF+ RoverLog is such a
good choice. It is written in tcl/tk and is portable to just about
anything (Win, *nix, MacOS 9 & X, pda's, toasters...). No strange
looks if I bring in my PowerBook and get on the network with the
Windows guys. I wish there was something comparable for all/hf
contesting. Maybe jlog is the answer. What we need to do is convince
contest software writers to write in a portable language like Java,
tcl, or such not VB. RoverLog also uses tcp/udp sockets for
rig/rotor/keyer/gps/networking. Tom even went as far as to register
these ports (3677 for instance) with IANA. Even if you don't want to
use this app there are some really good lessons to be learned from it
regarding writing cross platform apps. I couldn't find an entry at
IANA for Writelog.
