Instead of doing the System updates using Software Update, go to the  
Apple site and download the update software there. Burn it to CD, and  
then you will always have it for future use, without having to go  
through the long download again.

I keep all the Apple updates on CD, so if I'm working on a computer  
on site, I can bring the computer up to date without having to worry  
about the existence of an Internet connection.
