Count me as another tech (not Apple, but an Apple Service Provider)
who always uses the Partition function in Disk Utility when I'm
setting up a new hard drive, even when setting up only one partition
(which I do, by choice, ALL the time unless the customer specifies
differently).
My experience has been occasional failures of the new drive to boot
in Mac OS X if I used Erase and then installed a new OS. I never had
that problem when using Partition.
