You shouldn't need to do that to get EchoMac to work.  Ports
5198 and 5199 are only used for UDP (which is not filtered by
the default Apple firewall configuration), and the TCP connection
on port 5200 is initiated by the Mac.

But a router or firewall external to the Mac could be a problem.

I agree that visiting the echotest server is a good first step.

P.S.  And there are folks that filter incoming echolink
connections.  I've encountered a couple of stations that don't
allow connections from 7J* for example... at least not without
mailing the system administrator and asking to use their
repeater/link.
