Thanks to everybody that responded to by question.  I followed the 
advice of Don and Dick and bought  a Keyspan  19HS USB to serial 
adapter and it is working FB with my dowloaded demo MacLogger.  I am 
just beginning to acquainted with MacLogger, but like what I see, so 
far.  I am getting old (77) and slow adapting to new things.
