I had a similar problem from burning executables I was warned would cause problems....
A fresh install of Panther, as an upgrade from OSX 10.3 (the burning was with 10.3) solved the issue...
It does not sound like a hardware issue, though.
having a GREAT day!

No, I have more than half of a 60gig drive left. I ordered a new
superdrive from cdetech. I hope it works.
It was going bad for 6 months or so. First it ejected CDs I was
trying to burn, then it wouldn't boot from Norton, later it wouldn't
mount any CDs, and wouldn't boot from TT4, either. The only CD that
worked was the Apple Hardware Test (silver) CD, and that was just
fine (!).
A day at the Apple Store at least let me run TT4 from another Mac to
clean up some problems, and the guys were just great, but even they
recommended I get a new superdrive.
Part of the problem with my G4 MAY have been that the fan holes in
the back of the tower had been clogged with an oily dust layer
accumulated over the course of a year or so under the bench. I
suspect that excess heat did the damage. I hope and pray that the
motherboard is OK. Anyway, that's my guess.
I'll report back in a week or so, after the new drive comes, and let
you know if it worked.
thanks
harris
