I've found Disk First Aid to be very useful, using it together with
Disk Warrior. It's not the weak-sister that it used to be before Mac OS
8.1. It's a very rare occurrence when it comes up with something it
can't repair (and I've found that when it does, it's frequently
hardware-related and results in replacing parts).
My job is computer service-and-repair related, so I find myself using
disk utilities a _lot_...:-)
