I tried Mail a while back, also, and also dumped it in favor of Eudora.

I've tried a number of e-mail clients over the years, and have always
gone back to Eudora. The biggest hold it had on me was the excellent
way it handled mailing lists, threading and date-sorting like no other
client would.

But I knew this version of Mail was coming, and I've been looking
forward to it, in anticipation of finally being able to drop Eudora for
good. The list handling, threading and sorting in this version is head
and shoulders above what it's been before, and it's finally the mail
client for me.

I would recommend, don't go by what it was before. Give it another try.
The new features in the Panther version are a compelling reason to
change.
