Chris - Thanks for the coments.
When the AIO had 32 MB of memory MM took 22 MB and the system took 9MB. The
memory was maxed out so there was no room for anything else, like the
documentation. After adding 128MB of memory, MM took 44 MB and the system
17 MB. Things were much smoother and I could read the documentation while I
operated it. Would things improve if I allocated even m,ore memory to it?
If you are interested, On my G# AIO 233 MHz 160 MB RAM, MM uses about 13%
CPU time at max, and is occasionally down as low as 9%. I briefly ran it on
a 66 MHz 6100 with 40 MB of memory and it used between 89% and 93% of CPU
time.
This would seem to indicate that the CPU is available for faster window
updates, at least on this class of machines.
I will upgrade to 9, I am currently using 8.something, download 4.2.0, and
see if it runs. I will let you know.
I have 2 kids in college, so I make do with hand me down machines. The main
machine here is a B&W G3, but I share that with my wife and she is reluctant
to upgrade to OSX from 9.2.2 . She has seen my improvements before. :^)
I intend to upgrade the AIO with a faster ZIF and more memory as I find good
deals, so I will have an OSX machine in the shack when the hardware is
upgraded. :^) - Duffey
