I have been rewriting the instructions yesterday for the new xastir
stable version (it's not up on the web yet). this is hat I have put in
on installing Fink and its packages.

Install Fink <http://fink.sourceforge.net> per the instructions. To
install the necessary packages and libraries to compile and run xastir,
I recommend installing and using FinkCommander
<http://finkcommander.sourceforge.net/>.
Following packages at least need to be installed.

autoconf25
automake
curl
curl-dev
imagemagick
lcms
lesstif
libjpeg
libpng3
libtiff
libxml2
system-xfree86

You will be prompted to install additional packages; just use the
default response. When completed, quit FinkCommander.

If you used

./configure --prefix=/sw
make
make install

your xastir application is in /sw/bin and there is also a /sw/xastir
folder. This contains all the support files: maps, sounds, configs,
etc. You can put your maps in that maps folder but you may need to
change privileges (get info) in order to be able to put stuff in it.

The xastir115 folder (I guess that is the expanded folded of what you
downloaded) is no longer required after "make install".

I am not familiar with the baycom modem, but you should not need ax25.
Note that the Serial KISS TNC interface assumes that the TNC already is
in KISS mode.

Indeed a question for the xastir list.
