I agree with the philosophy, but practice may may not allow capital punishment.
I now receive approximately 400 e-mails a day. My ISP spam blocker
intercepts only about half. Leaving about 190 unwanted messages I
have to sort through. I am being forced to think about going to a
verification system myself, despite the fact that it presents a lot
of other problems.
Another list that I belong to has the headers arranged where a simple
"reply" will go only to the poster of the original message. To post
to all members, the posting address has to be entered or "reply to
all" selected. Obviously this has some negatives too, but it does
eliminate automated replies going to everyone.
Having been in the "e-mail" community since the late 80's, I find the
(relatively) recent avalanche of spam a tragedy. Unfortunately, like
a real avalanche there is no turning it back, and it will probably
change the face of e-mail as we have known it.
