You can access serial ports under Classic. One gotcha though with USB
ports - my experience has been that if you have an OSX driver for a USB
serial port, it is no longer visible (or usable) under Classic. I've
found no differences or problems using serial/USB adapters. Indeed, I
have a bunch of them. 

I wouldn't have thought so a year, or even six months ago, but I am
almost ready to turn off Classic. I finally upgraded from Eudora 3.1.3
to 5.2, and got the latest Newswatcher that runs under OSX. I still use
ResEdit in classic, but once I make the move to Resourcer, I should be
able to be 100% OSX, other than needing to test out Classic versions of
my apps.
