There is no need to change file names to make them visible - indeed that is
probably the fastest way to stop everything working.


Get the Freeware 'TinkerTool'

And under Finder pane, there is an option to show hidden and system files.

TinkerTool is just a graphical interface to controls 'buried' in OSX - it's
not doing anything 'naughty' - just revealing options Apple thought most
people wouldn't want.
