Another option is the "other OS", Linux. I'm reluctant to mention it on
this list, but there are distributions that will run on Mac hardware. I
think the kenel that Debian uses will only run on a PPC, but I'm fairly
sure that there are others that will run on the older machine. That
said, if you want a fancy GUI it will be _S_L_O_W_ on an older machine -
but if can be satified with the text console performance if quite
reasonable.
Then, the price of development tools is free - just like the OS.
One caution, going from MAC 7.6 to Linux is a steeeeeep learning
curve!!! I would recommend finding a friendly, local guru to help easy
the climb.
