This is a real problem indeed to write a driver is specialist work and
time
consuming and about tcp/ip is not reliable for sound .
As i mentioned in an previous mail usb is great for audio and usb 2
will be as fast as firewire now !
There are companies that make credit card readers for mac and they
could possibly offer there knowledge.
For linux there is a lot of activity to develop drivers witch could be
helpfull

I am looking into making a i2c driver for the UDA1335 chip in the imic
so one could solder some wire's to the i2c connector in it

rs232 with keyspan works great no problems there.
