[Ham-Linux] Live or deceased?

I have access to a web page server that I also use to swap data and
programs with a client. It has public and private sections so I can and
do easily post photos and files.

In years past when I've tried yahoo groups, I've received excessive spam
messages from yahoo and yahoo spammers so that I refuse to even look at
yahoo groups that require some form of signing in.

I believe it is possible in these lists to allow limited size
attachments, like maybe 100K maximum, but if there are still
participants doing dial up those can be a royal pain blocking e-mail for
extended periods, and those using smartphones sometimes run out of data
per day without large e-mail attachments. Then there's data efficiency.
binary attachmentts to e-mail grow about double in size because e-mail
only guarantees the printable ASCII characters and the common control
characters, not 8 bit binary. So 8 bit binary gets sent using only about
70 unique characters in combinations doubling or more than doubling the
attachment size. ftp and http downloads do come through as 8 bit binary
so are considerably better at using the available bandwidth when its
limited. I was limited on dial up about 7 miles from the central office,
too far to get DSL, then I went to Verizon Wireless that has a monthly
limit and many out in the country are using satellite services with
daily limits and both have severe penalties when the usage goes over.
Now I have 4 megabit service in the country with fiber to the home and
no monthly limit so I'm nearly in heaven. I could get a higher data rate
for more money but so for any time downloads are slow its the server at
the source end, not the path locally.

A hazard with allowing larger attachments is that they can contain
unfriendly parts if spammed and if there are many subscribers the main
list server bandwidth gets eaten alive.

I noticed from the archives that the last discussion was in December. I
think my inquiry has caused some good discussion and maybe we should
make it point to post here to remind subscribers that its still working.
I discovered it and 4 others that I had not moved to my new e-mail
address because qth.net didn't send me monthly reminders of them.
