That's interesting. I bet many didn't think of that, myself included.

But, that happened to me too some time ago.
This is what I noticed:

sometimes when I'm not playing radio, I use the PC for something else
That something else may include sound (music, etc) and we adjust to 
compensate
the volume or sometimes we lower the volume to a whisper.
I think you know where this is heading (smile).
Next day, when I opened FLDIGI (aghast!) no sound!

It seems the PC volume setting remains to your last user setting which 
may not be
correct for FLDIGI. I now use Mint and do not have that experience anymore.
