With Slackware, those files are in my home directory, which is on a
different partition from the kernel, system, etc. So once I install the
update, I mount /home and everything is there. No muss, no fuss. I also
keep /usr/local on a separate partition, so I usually don't need to
recompile any of the applications there if I don't wish to.

Interesting perspective, and as others have suggested, perhaps you have
missed the point.  Enough said, I am glad you are successful with Slackware.
