Microsoft clearly has a stronger presence in the US
than is Europe.

Puppy Linux, which I believe to be one of the best
distros, is based in Australia.  Others have origins
across the globe.

Given the much higher cost of living in Europe they
have had a stronger economic motivation to investigate
alternatives to the high cost of MS products - with the
economic downturn here one may anticipate some new hard
looks at Linux in the USA as well.
