[Ham-Linux] Fresh Feisty Installation... looking for software suggestions.

Greetings,
     I just got my ticket last week and managed to dredge up an old laptop
that I can devote to my new found hobby. Just curious if anyone could
provide links, suggestions, or positive suggestions for software to pile up
on this machine. I have been through the packages that are part of the
default software repositories, I'm not entirely certain that I know what I
need or might need. Any help would be great.
