You didn't say what are the resources of your spare
computer.
I am fond of Puppy Linux because it will run on almost
any PC, even much older ones. It is designed to be small,
complete, and fast. And, of course, free! :-)
I have tried the big commercial versions like RedHat and
SuSE, as well as dozens of others, commercial and free.
As for guidance and support ...
My experience is that computer books are nearly worthless
as most suffer two chronic weaknesses:
1. The authors *always* assume that you will somehow
magically know the steps they inexplicably leave out of
their explanations.
2. They are outdated months before they are published.
(The Linux world moves very rapidly - far more so than
the print world.)
Many of the online FAQ's, Wiki's, and assorted Help resources
are also chronically out of date and incomplete.
The *best* source by far is an active User Support Forum
populated by members of the development team and fellow
users.
The Puppy Forum is excellent. I imagine those of some of
the other distros are as well.
