I have a Thinkpad T42 with a Conexant chipset and the license fee is
now $10 (US). With kernel 2.6.14 there is an issue with the hardware
flow control and I found that I had to set kppp to use software flow
control for the modem to work. The hsfmodem mailing list archives at
linuxant.com have the details.

The sl-modem-daemon package in Debian is supposed to work with the ALSA
snd-intel8x0m module to provide Conexant modem capability. I've been
successful with it using the 2.6.12 kernel in KNOPPIX, but had problems
with the 2.6.14 kernel in Debian (I tried it before I learned of the
software flow control work-around for hsfmodem).
