Jonathan,

You mention 'yum update' so I assume you're running a Fedora Core 
install. If not, then skip all this, clarify for us what you've got and 
we'll try again.

For an FC install, try this:
$yum clean all <enter>

Then try the
$yum -y update <enter>
again.

It's not un heard of, either, of recent updates having dependency 
issues. If this doesn't solve your problem, just wait a few days and try 
again. The guys run'n the repositories are pretty good at get'n these 
fixed. I've had a few blow up like this - but after cleaning everything 
and waiting - never had one fail a 2nd time.
