I haven't played with ubunto, but setting up the dial-up connection 
will depend on how you connect to your ISP. The last time I did that, I 
used the PPP protocol and either PAP or CHAP authentication, with a 
dial-on-demand configuration. I had a Slackware box with both modem and 
NIC that I used as a firewall between the home network and the dial-up 
line. Anytime somebody tried to access an IP address outside the network 
it would dial out to the ISP to establish a connection. When there had 
been no traffic over that connection for ten minutes, it would hang up. 
That was over ten years ago, so I don't recall much about it. There 
should be a How-To about it somewhere.
