[Ham-Linux] network problems

I got the problem solved and I know what I did to solve it, 
but I dont know why or how it solved the problem.

Here is what happened.

I tried to install FC4 on a spare computer.  A Dell XPS T500.

The installation would not recognize my network card so I 
tried to install the card manually using software provided 
by the system.  That did not work either.

I tried the following cards
3com Etherlink III - 16 bit isa
RTL-8139 PCI
DEC 21040 (tulip) PCI

All three of the cards WERE recognized and worked properly 
under win98se (dual boot system).

I finally got the install software to recognize an RTL 8029 
PCI card, so I am a happy camper, now.  Well, happier than I 
was for most of last week.

Anyone have any idea why the three cards listed would not 
play under Linux?
