After your boot up is complete, try running "alsaconf" from a command
line (you'll need root's word).   Just follow the bread crumbs ...
give it "OK" or "yes" when it asks.  Then try re-running your aps. 
That's what works here (Knoppix has problems, but a straight Debian
has no problems).
