Core 4 defaults to the Gnome desk top which I have never favored in the
past preferring to stick with KDE. However, since my first install, I
started with Core 3, I have decided that I like the Gnome interface a
lot and have switched to it as my default. When I installed Core 4 I
chose the "custom" install and have both available so if I want to
switch to KDE or use one of the KDE utilities I can. I have found that
if you have the disk space and the time it is best to pick custom
install and pick "EVERYTHING" for package selection. This makes sure
you have all of the libraries for the various components. It dose take
quite a bit longer to install than just the "personal desktop" and same
for doing the initial updates.

Don't take my word for it however. I am at the beginning of the
learning curve with Linux and have a long way to go. There might be a
better way to do the install. West (By God) Virginia you say. You are
in the heart of Mepis country! What are you doing running Fedora?
:-) I am in Oakmont which is about 14~15 miles up the Allegheny
River from the Point at Pittsburgh. I like tinkering with Linux and was
tired of dealing with Microsoft in the ham shack. There are some things
that are only available on a Windows box that I will have to keep a
laptop around for like programming some of my radios. About 98% of what
I do on a day to day basis though Linux does and does better than
Windows. I am looking to put at least one packet station on full time
and perhaps APARS all of which I hope to be Linux based. Let me know
how you make out.
