: LinkedIn uses a nasty business model. They invite new users to "invite"
all
: their friends to also join (by default) - and hide this in their signup so
: most new users have no idea they can say "no thanks". And if they don't
: find that switch, it emails everyone in their contacts.
Actually, it's a big popup right at signup, so you know it's there, same
with Facebook, MySpace, et cetera. People, by "default" not knowing what
this choice is, take the easy route and click "OK" and don't think what it
means to the rest of the world down the road, nor do they realize that by
having their e-mail client save addresses by default, the problems it can
cause when they join LinkedIn and click the find friends option five or ten
years in the future. That's a big address book they've told a website to
scan.
I received a legitimate e-mail this afternoon, but I also receive non-legit
invites through a-mail address only associated with e-mail forums such as
Yahoo and QTH.net. All e-mail have the option to opt out of further contact
online or via contacting customer support, whether it's through my
"business" e-mail address, or different addresses through groups:
>From this afternoon, note the unsubscribe option in this plain text cut and
paste and option to contact customer service:
