From ham-computers at mailman.qth.net Wed Nov 19 19:53:53 2014 From: ham-computers at mailman.qth.net (Robert Downs via Ham-Computers) Date: Wed, 19 Nov 2014 19:53:53 -0500 Subject: [Ham-Computers] Trojans in Update Software Message-ID: <4805f.4e539893.419e95a1@cs.com> On our three machines (2 XP & 1 WIN8) I run whatever the current version of Norton is (because it's "free" from our ISP, Comcast). In the last two days, Iit has claimed to have blocked two software updates, one for Google Chrome and one for Adobe Reader 11.?. In between, it passed a FireFox update. I don't actually use either program (but keep them as backups mainly for checking if I have a problem with FireFox or Acrobat X) so not having the update isn't a major issue. But has anyone else encountered this? There are two possibilities, one that Norton is screwed up and two that someone is actually either hacking legitimate updates or spoofing them. And it would be prudent to find out which. In fact, I bought them from you years ago! What I was refering to when I said "before 1930" were two Buffalo Nickels to go along with the T1 and T2 1913 nickels. I do not remember if I gave you the list of coins by phone or e-mail. I appologize for the confusion. I am still working on the list of Lincoln cents that you asked me for. Sorry it has taken me so long to get it done. Ever since the heart attack my energy is a long ways from what it was! The cardiologist tells me that is perfectly when the heart muscle has been damaged. Well, it may be normal but I am not used to falling asleep if I sit down for ten minutes! Makes it might tough to read this physics text I have been struggling with for six weeks! I wake up and have to search for where I last recall reading something. Very annoying! I am trying to put together the following for the grandsons: Two Buffalo Nickels in the twenties. 1 BU Liberty Nickel. 1 Barber Dime BU - unless a lot of money, then AU. 1 Mercury Dime BU in the teens. 2 Mercury Dimes BU in the twenties. 2 Mercury Dimes BU in the thirties. 1 Barber Quarter BU, unless expensive, then AU. 2 Standing Liberty Quarters XF/AU. Not 2 Washington Quarters BU: 1932 P and 1933 or 1934. 1 Barber Half, XF+. 1 Walking Liberty Half in the teens, XF+. 1 Walking Liberty Half in the twenties, XF+ 1 Walking Liberty Half in the thirties, AU+. Work on these coins, there is no rush Dave. Christmas is still thirty-six days away! (LOL!) If I go broke buying the coins, the kids can wait until their birthdays! Grandpa may not be as young and healthy as those four grandsons, but grandpa is smarter, been there - tried that and assuredly more devious than they realize! It is called survival! I guess this old fart is having a brain freeze but I can not get my HP Envy M7-j020DX laptop to boot from a CD. I have searched the BIOS setup and found nothing that works; the only thing I found on the internet was that I have to disable 'Safe Boot' but the BIOS won't let me disable it. HP's web site is useless! This problem started when I tried to reset my Windows password(s) with some software that I purchased; the software creates a reset CD to do the recovery and hence the problem! I have no use for HP computers, but most bioses allow you to press a key *before* boot up that gives you a choice of bootable devices that will appear on your screen, you scroll up or down and press enter, try: (other than: go to bios) escape delete F12, F2, F1. Usually on one end or the other of the keyboard, as it boots up on the bios screen look for instructions at or near the bottom. -- Ron KA4INM - Youvan's corollary: Every action results in unwanted side effects. No matter what I try I can not get this machine to boot from a CD or USB stick. I feign being a old fart but I have been around the block MORE than once but this one has got me stumped....The really sad part is that HP wants $$ to even talk to me about a problem with one of their products. If I set the BIOS for Legacy mode it will not load Windows but the F9 boot option screen does show up but it will not boot from the CD disk. If I set the Bios for UEFI mode It will load Windows but not give the option for booting from the CD. Maybe I should take up golf...... Gene, W?QFC
