The problem is that by and large, sites that don't store critical info are
likely to be easier to hack. And people who use non-critical sites are
likely to use some critical ones. If someone hacks a site and gets into the
pass words, they most likely get user ID, email address and name associated
with the PW. They can then plug that into their attack software and start
pinging financial sites around the country. Or they may also get your address
and concentrate on critical sites in your city.
Anyway, It's probably relatively safe to have a common PW that you only use
for sites that you only visit once or twice and that require you to set up
an "account" just to do whatever you need to do that caused you to go there.
Something like 123459876. But just about any site that you visit
regularly, regardless of whether or not it is critical (financial, etc.) should have
a unique PW. That way, when (not if) something critical gets hacked (like
eBay just did), you only have one to worry about. I have over a hundred of
them.
