Sounds like you have Win XP. I seem to remember it was in the Windows File
Types section where you choose what you want to open each filetype with. Go
to, for example, ".doc" and edit. There was an advanced button. In there
you could UNCHECK something like "open in same browser window". Been a
while now with XP that I may not have it completely correct. Need to do the
same for all extensions you want this to happen.

Subject: [Ham-Computers] File problem with IE8
I recently converted from IE7 to IE8 on one of our workstations by
installing 8 over 7. Virtually nothing looks different and in general I see
no performance changes (neither faster nor slower). However, the way in
which 8 handles opening files on websites is totally different.
Specifically DOC, JPG, PDF, TXT and XLS. Under 7, when I clicked or
double-clicked (as
appropriate) on a file, IE apparently called the associated viewer of record
to open the file. 8 on the other hand seems to open the file itself and
does a PP job of it. No paging forward or back. No zoom or fit to page
capability.
And you don't close the file when done, you have to remember to hit the Back
button. Etc. Does anyone know whether there is a way in which to force it
back to the previous response (i.e., use the program that presumably knows
how to properly open the file type)? I have looked but cannot find anything
that pertains to file types except
