Checked the Windows XP inside and Out 1423 page book Windows XP "Professional" is the 64 bit edition version. It should tell you on the boot screen if its the professional Ed. 64 bit O/S is backward compatible with 32 bit

If you right click on the task bar, and choose "Properties", then "Start
Menu" you'll see radio buttons that let you choose either "Start menu"
or "Classic Start menu". Select "Start menu" and you'll see a two column
dialog.
