Greetings Duane (et al),

If you haven't made the changes already, they can be done with Microsoft's
group policy editor, Microsoft's TweakUI power-toy, or via direct registry
editing (or a .REG file). I've attached the appropriate .REG file so Duane
gets a copy. Duane, change the last three letters of the file from T X T to R
E G when you save the file - some e-mail systems filter out .REG files.

Once you have the file saved, double-click it. Windows should open a
confirmation prompt to add the contents of the file to the registry - select
"Yes". If it merges properly, you should get a "successful" box - click OK to
close it. You'll need to reboot for the changes to take affect.

For those on the list, the contents of the file is below (between the
asterisks). It resets the AutoRun and AutoInsertNotification settings to the
Windows XP defaults. For other versions of Windows, change the value "91"
(hex) to "95" (hex).

For reference, there was a 2009 security update that also changed the behavior
of AutoRun to prevent malware proliferation. For info, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971029.

p.s. Yes, it is me.

**********
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:0x00000091

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:0x00000091

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom]
"Autorun"=dword:00000001
**********

Open Windows notepad, cut and paste the stuff between (not including) the
asterisks, and save it as "autorun.reg". The name "autorun" can be anything
you want, but you must add the .reg at the end - otherwise, notepad saves it
with a .txt extension and it won't open properly as a registry file.

Yes, it is I, the blind wonder with another computer mystery. Like how do I
enable the auto-start function of the CD/DVD read/write device?

A well meaning friend who configured this Compaq system for me turned the
auto-start function off so that I would not accidentally start a CD. I guess!
In any event, I want it to play the CD or DVD I insert without me having to
manually start them.

This is Windows XP Home Edition.

Thanks you.
