I would think the MB has a COM port header (my very new Z68 does). In the
BIOS there is a place to turn it off. Dan KI6X

Subject: [Ham-Computers] Freeing up COM 1
Hello,
I have a computer that has all USB ports and no regular serial ports. When I
check device manager it says COM 1 in use.
I have a USB to serial converter cable and its software grams COM 5 because
COM 1 is in use.
Is there a way to free up the COM 1 which is not there or being used as far
as I know or will a USB serial cable not program to COM 1?
Maybe my motherboard has serial port plugs that are not routed to
connectors..
Thanks!
