[Ham-Computers] How Much RAM

A friend is buying a new laptop, and asked how much RAM he should 
get.  I'm running XP, so don't know.

As far is usage is concerned, he's an Optometrist and needs it for 
his work - mostly record keeping as far as I can tell.  He is not a 
gamer, doesn't download music or video, and I don't think he has a 
camera.  So, his primary usage would be for work, emails, and some 
web surfing.  He is not purchasing a MAC or using Linux.

Any suggestions?
