for compatibility's sake, yes.

you can't degrade performance of apps that won't run in 64 bit :)

linux.
You could run any version of Win under it in a virtual machine.  All 
that ram couldn't hurt.


But think long term too.  Do you expect to be using software that will 
only run properly on W7?  I don't particularly care for 7 but I have to 
support it.  I run XP when necessary at home.
