Or burn some toast and make sure they all sound-off!
Four members of a local family died here a few days ago in a fire.
They learned on Christmas day that their detectors were not working
when something caught fire on the stove. They procrastinated about
repair or replacement of the detectors. It proved a fatal error a
couple of days later.
Code now requires smoke/co2 detectors, that they be powered from a
dedicated AC breaker, that they have battery backup, and that they
are all tied together so if one is triggered they all sound-off.
If propane/methane is used in or near your home you should also
have at least one detector for that.
Some may choose to add a radon detector as well.
