Hi John:
I guess my luck continues. I have three computers, all running XP,
and had no lockup problems. In fact, there was no change in
operation, so I assume I had not run anything that needed Java.

I kept fairly complete notes, and noticed we had downloaded different app's.

The automatic update that didn't install properly was
  jre-6u22-windows-i586-itfw-rv.exe.

The Offline version I downloaded from the Java site was
  jre-6u22-windows-i586-s.exe
This version installed with no problems.

The uninstaller programs we used are really useful; everyone should
get one. Yours was free, and mine has a 30-day trial period. I read
a review CNET?? for Total Install before downloading it, and it
mentioned Revo, which you used. Total Install has some pluses, but
Revo is free. Total Install has a 30-day free trial period. I'll
install Revo on this computer so I can compare the two. I get the
impression I have barely scratched the surface when using Total Install.

Jim
