Here's my experience with a recent Java update problem and my
fix: I'm running Win XP.

An automatic update balloon appeared in the system tray area, saying
there was an update for Java. Installation didn't finish properly
and an error 1722 window appeared. I went to Java help, searched for
error 1722, and discovered there is a problem with InstallShield that
has not been fixed. I was directed to use the offline version, which
works fine.

The update is available at
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp Be sure to select the
offline version, as there's also an online version. Don't let the
word "offline" bug you, it installs in a normal manner. Remove the
existing Java installation before installing the offline version. I
had two Java's to remove. I think one was the existing version and
the other the aborted upgrade.

As far as removing the existing Java, I guess I was lucky. About the
same time, I was attempting to remove a stubborn program that
Add-Remove Programs hardly touched, and had just downloaded Total
Uninstall (which works fine). I used Total Uninstall. Java
recommended using the control panel Add-Remove Programs.
