I had a similar problem once with one of the machines here when we were
running W2K. I think it involved SP4. I finally concluded that SP4 (or
whatever it was) was installed but the update history track had had a glitch and
didn't show it. So the updater kept trying to install it. I finally hid it
so attempts stopped. The other W2k machine here at the time did not have
the problem. For unrelated reasons (new system board, I think) I reinstalled
the OS from scratch and did not have the problem the next time around.

I have no idea whether that is your current problem or not - it just sounds
familiar - but if it is, the only two fixes would appear to be to hide it
so it doesn't keep trying or to start over again from scratch. Probably
somewhere in the Registry, there is a place where it could be fixed by I haven't
a clue as to where or how. The only other remote possibility would be to
see whether you can locate and identify it in the list of updates in
Add/Remove Programs, and if so, try to remove it.
