Gene,
Basically, all scanners output a graphic image. Including your HP. The
software running on the scanner may (or may not) do OCR during image post
processing. According to the Acrobat 7 manual, the OCR (which it refers to as
text) is stored in a different :layer". When you run one of the search
options, it's this layer that is searched. The manual implies that the image
layer is what's actually displayed.
Anyway, if the original PDF you had met certain requirements (Version 7
says minimum resolution > 145 dpi (ppi)) your Version 9 should have been able
to convert the file to searchable.
