I've seen many "manuals" available for download that are really scans of the
hard copy. Any in that format are really pictures - there are no "words" to
search. Everything is just dots (pixels).
Maybe that's what is stopping the search function.

I dumped Adobe for Foxit. I think the search function depends on how the PDF
file was created. I have some that are searchable, and some that are not.
Maybe someone who is more knowlegeable about creating PDFs can comment.
