[Ham-Computers] Running 2 programs

I didnt know really how to phrase the title and I'm asking the following 
question cause I don't know the answer...:)

I'm helping a friend out by updating their computer..AV, spyware, Windows 
updates, etc.

Can I run the AV and spyware program at the same time or do they have to be 
run seperate?

Anytime I have done work like this on the side, I have run seperate, but got 
to thinking about this today and was wondering what happens it you run them 
at the same time.
