Good counsel, Herb & Kurt, thanks!

Both get low-end external LCD's and become desktop-equivalent
computers for the two youngest.

Now that I don't have to buy a new laptop computer ...

I have a Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 that needs a new home -- it
works OK except the USB connector needs repair -- we've been
using a dual-USB PCMCIA adapter instead.

Perhaps that could leverage a Netbook so I don't have to lug my
CF-29 around any more ... hmmmm.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've had many laptops do that over the decades. The lines come from a
damaged ribbon cable, the light coming on, then dimming is a bad
flourescent
tube. I've repaired both, many times, but unless you have parts, time,
money, access to SMT soldering equipment and the skills, toss the computer
and get a newer one.
