[Ham-Computers] Need help with Anti virus

Hello all, I kind of screwed up and need some help.
I forgot to update my wife's computer running Win XP to AVG 9.0 and don't 
know exactly what she did but she either got a bad case of spyware or a 
trojan on it.

Needless to say she said you always make sure you're computer is up to date 
and not mine...:)

I tried to get latest AVG on it, but the spyware keeps poppin up on it, and 
won't let me download it.
I also put that AVG rescue stuff on the website on a thumb drive and ran 
that, that didn't work either.
Then I got to thinking about system restore I went back about 2 weeks when I 
knew the system was working good.
I went back to the AVG site and everything was working great, then I went to 
install the AVG and a box popped up saying which program did I want to open 
the file up with.

I didn't know, so I chose IE and that didn't do it.

Any suggestions on what I can do to get her computer back up and running.

Normally these types of things don't cause me any problems, but I have had a 
run of bad luck lately!
