[Ham-Computers] PCI Express slot

Thanks for the reply! The PC is a Gateway, but shortly after I received it,
Gateway sold that division to another company. Trying to find anything
through this other company is an exercise in futility! Plus, this PC wasn't
purchased - it was a replacement for a PC that had been repaired 13 times in
less than a year. PC version of the Lemon Law hi!
This PC has no AGP slot, so I could eliminate that. Found that out when I
went to install my old AGP video card and it wouldn't fit into a slot!
I have a PCI sound card installed, so I was able to identify that slot type
easily enough.
This leaves two slots - one of which is only about an inch or so long. Not
what I'm looking for. The last slot looks about the same size as the PCI
slots, but is black instead of white, and has the locking lever at the end
farthest from the case opening. The PCI slots do not have this locking
lever. It also sits back from the slot openings farther than the PCI slots
by a couple of inches or so.
Not much to go on, I know, but my Google search turned up way too much
information: PCI, PCI Express, PCI-X, X-2, X-4, and so on. This PC is about
a year old, so it's likely not the latest technology. I may just have to
bring it to someone to have it identified!
Tnx es 73

Dave,
What is the vintage of your board and who made it. You might go to that
maker's web site and look up the board specs. I take it that you do not
have
the installation instructions.
Our newest currently in-service board has a PCI Express X16 slot. The
installation instructions show an isometric drawing of the board being
installed
and what look like they are probably to scale color side view drawings on
an AGP and a PCI Express X16 board (with a red "X" overlaying the AGP
board).
Both type sockets have the latch at the back end of the board, and both
boards have the notch for the latch. According to the drawings, the PCI
Express X16 socket is farther from the board mounting panel and slightly
longer
than the standard PCI sockets. The AGP socket, going by the board drawing,
is farther yet away from the panel but its socket would be slightly shorter
than the one for the X16. I don't have an actual AGP board handy to look
at.
Also, the AGP board is shown as having two slots between edge connector
lands. The X16 board has only one, and closer to the panel. Both boards
have
one or more additional slots but none are between lands. There may be a
bridge matching up with the slot in the board across the X16 socket near the
panel end. That's what those slots are usually for. But I can't recall
whether my socket actually has it or not, and it isn't visible with the
board
installed.
