Duane, Can't imagine doing all you do without sight.  I did some looking
around on the internet and this is for sure a dinosaur scanner in computer
terms.  Just to pass on some simple fix, HP suggests the lock might be on or
maybe partially on.  Maybe the vibration shook it.  Might try to lock and
unlock to make sure it is not partially stuck.  They do say that can make
grinding sounds and cause it to bind up at the bottom of the scan along with
belt slipping and other problems that need HP repair.  Here is their
procedure for lock and unlock:

For HP Scanjet IIp and 3p scanners
Raise the copy board cover. The lock/unlock assembly is toward the rear.
Turn it so that it points to the unlock position.
