You may want to download and burn to CD the iso of Puppy
Linux 4.3b2 (it's in second-stage beta).

Just oot it from the CD and check it out. You may find that
it provides all that you are seeking and in a smaller and
very friendly footprint.

I am completely unfamiliar with Ubuntu so cannot respond to
how they have implemented, or not, the features that you seek.

We have three laptops here that are dual-booted WinXP and
Puppy Linux but we never ever use XP - it is only there in
case there is an emergency need to run some app for the
cellphone or some other device for which the provider only
offers a user-unfriendly proprietary interface.
