Brian: I didn't have much luck, but searched amazon.com for long
range wireless adapter and found some. They were USB instead of
PCMCIA, but look like they will work
ok. See
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_8_11?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=long+range+wireless+adapter&sprefix=long+range+
(not sure about the last plus showing up as a link. You may need to search).
When you try it out, you will need to find a known wireless
source. Starbucks is a good choice, but be careful I bought my
second notebook used over eBay, looking for a local person and saying
I wanted a demo as part of the purchase. He met me at Starbucks; and
it worked fine. I started on my trip, and wanted to see if I could
get it working. I went to a Starbucks (in another state) and asked a
waitress it they had wireless. She said yes, but I had no
luck. They were really busy, so I went back early next morning when
they had no customers. I asked the waitress for a good location, and
she pointed out a table. I made a connection, but it was weak and
the signal was coming from a nearby motel. I asked again, saying I
couldn't get Starbucks, only a weak signal from a nearby motel...She
said oh, they wouldn't have it hooked up until next Thursday. After
a few more incidents I started asking.... do you have wireless, is it
free, and does it work? One more story. I stopped at a motel
(different trip with no rv), and asked my usual questions. He said
yes, and it is secured. He gave me a long password, think it was 23
digits, a complete jumble of letters and numbers. He was very proud
of it. I went to my room and had no success. I decided I was too
tired to enter it correctly, so waited until the next morning. I
went to the office with my computer, and a woman was behind the
counter. I mentioned my problem, got the password again, and tried
it out right there. No luck. The lady said she couldn't get on either.
