[Ham-Computers] WI FI info

Hi Brian: Wireless pcmcia cards with external antenna connectors are
available, but the great majority have an internal antenna as part of
the card. I purchased one years ago for a laptop, but dropped the
laptop. I still have it somewhere, and will look for it and give you
the manufacturer-model, if you are interested. I purchased another
laptop with an internal wireless setup.

I'm looking for a wireless repeater, which I think would be much
better than a pcmcia card with an antenna port. I'm a RVer, and most
RV parks now have wifi available. There seem to be two types of
setups. One has a good setup with external antennas, but costs
around $5.00/day. The other is free, but usually consists of a
wireless router on a shelf in the office. By the time the signal
radiates through the walls of the office, past some monster aluminum
RV's between me and the office, and through a window of my
aluminum-sided RV signal strength is nothing. I usually end up
sitting at a table in the laundry room, or at an outside park bench
near the office - not much fun after dark. I've found a few
repeaters, but they seem to have special requirements, such as the
transmitter (owned by RV park) and repeater (owned by me) have same
manufacture-model, or the repeater is designed to go between my modem
(I don't use an external modem) and computer. If anyone has any
specific suggestions regarding a suitable repeater and directional
antenna, I'm interested.

Jim
